Studies on the Effect of Alpha-Chymotrypsin on the Zonules and Other Ocular Tissues

Abstract
Part 1. Intracapsular cataract extraction using alpha-chymotrypsin from human eyes.
Intracapsular cataract extractions using ?-chymotrypsin were performed from 4 eyes of young adults aged 36, 38 and 39, and following results were obtained:
1) It was easy to do intracapsular cataract extraction with the aid of enzymatic zonulolysis for younger persons, which had been impossible or difficult before the advent of ?-chymotrypsin.
2) The main cause of the vitreous prolaps immediately after the above mentioned cataract extraction is though to be the weakening or disaggregation of the hyaloid membrane by the remaining enzyme after zonulolysis.
3) The best way, therefore, to prevent this vitreous prolaps is considered to utilize slight mechanical traction with capsule forceps or erisophake after using the minimum effective dosis of ?-chymotrypsin for the shortest time in consideration of the patient¢¥s age.
4) Any clinical evidence of allergic reaction by ?-chymotrypsin on a case of bilateral cataracts was not observed.
Part 2. Experimental study of animal eyes on the effect of alpha-chymetrypsin.
The author¢¥s experimental results concerning the effect of ?-chymotrypsin on the
zonules, hyaloid membrane and other ocular structures of the rabbit¢¥s eyes, including
the stability of the?-chymotrypsin solution are as follows:
1) The zonulolytic effect of 1 : 5,000 solution of ?-chymotrypsin on the enucleated
